about

Full live performance of ODM in Chicago July 11, 1999.

From the liner notes:
------------------------------------------------------------
Overdrive Date Master: Live in Chicago was recorded on a mono hand held Radio Shack cassette recorder strategically placed somewhere near the stage.

This performance took place at Thurstons as part of the KULTBOX Neu Musik Summit July 11, 1999. Also appearing were Lesser, Matmos, The Drowsy Birds, Rude66, and man many others.

Instruments abused include: Library of congress 8PRM record player and C series pitch shifting tape deck, modified Theremaniacs Theremin, two Ibanez AD9 delays, and dozens of flea market find records and cassettes.

Thanks to: Rob and Kent of KULTBOX, Rubbergrrl, Imre (for hospitality he never knew he gave), the sound man who actually jumped onstage to adjust our mic, all the other bands, and all the people who not only patiently listened but occasionally yelped.
---------------------------------------------------------

I remember this show. It was part of a two night weekend with the first performance in a south side illegal warehouse and the 2nd night (this recording) at a club in town. We changed into our jumpsuits while Kid606 slept on the couch "backstage" holding his laptop like a teddy bear. the Matmos boys were detuning a banjo. For a sunday night the club was packed and everyone was amazingly kind. Someone actually yelled "Fishtown" (back in 1999!!) from the audience.

We were one of many bands with very involved set ups and when we started no sound came out. You hear a minute or so of silence as we fumble around trying to turn the mixers or PA on while the audience yelps and makes us feel welcome anyway.

We didn't do out of town shows a lot but Rob asked me to play and how could I resist. I did warn him if we came out we would most likely play our 8RPM record DJ set which is pure psychedelic noise with virtually no redeeming musical value whatsoever. His reply was he expected nothing less.

We got paid with a Frostwave Resonator guitar pedal. Win/WIN.
